Foot Ball or Soccer

Football is the name given to a number of different, but related, team sports. The most popular of these world-wide is association football (also known as soccer). The English word “football” is also applied to American football, Australian rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, rugby football (rugby union and rugby league), and related games. Each of these codes (specific sets of rules) is to a greater or lesser extent referred to as “football” and sometimes “footy” by its followers.

These games involve:

a large spherical or prolate spheroid ball, which is itself called a football.

a team scoring goals and/or points, by moving the ball to an opposing team’s end of the field and either into a goal area, or over a line.

the goal and/or line being defended by the opposing team.

players being required to move the ball mostly by kicking and — in some codes — carrying and/or passing the ball by hand.

goals and/or points resulting from players putting the ball between two goalposts.

offside rules, in most codes, restricting the movement of players.

in some codes, points are mostly scored by players carrying the ball across the goal line.

in most codes players scoring a goal must put the ball either under or over a crossbar between the goalposts.

players in some codes receiving a free kick after they take a mark/make a fair catch.

Ancient Kicks: A History Of Soccer

Soccer is one of, if not the most popular sports in the world today.  Regardless of age, location, or race, soccer fans across the globe cheer on their favorite clubs with signature obnoxiousness and hooliganism.  But the real question is, where and when did such a sport actually come to be?  It is uncertain as to soccer’s actual time and place of invention, but it is well known that variations of the sport existed as long as 3000 years ago!

One such variation of the sport is recorded as being played in Japan around 1000 B.C., and there are even ancient texts from China describing a game resembling soccer between Japanese and Chinese teams in 50 B.C..   The Chinese conducted their variation of the sport with a leather ball filled with hair, and there was an actual soccer game played in Kyoto, Japan in 611 A.D.  The Romans even had a variation of soccer in their Olympics, in which each team had 27 players, two thirds of which had to be hospitalized after a 50 minute long match because competition was so fierce and brutal!  Although there are records of certain incidences of the game occurring, people of the time were not as concerned with recording soccer history as that of religion or war, and thus it is quite difficult to determine just how the sport spread across the globe.

The Controversy of Football and Football or Soccer

By far the most popular sport worldwide is football. Every year, millions of fans come together to experience the exciting moments offered by football players in venues around the globe. Being a team sport, football not only exercises the human body and mind, but also brings people together to produce measurable results. With famous players from every country, like the Brazilians Pelé and Zico, or the Hungarian Puskás, football-which is usually referred to as Association football in order to distinguish it from rugby football-has literally been worshiped mainly by male fans.

At least once, every boy in almost every neighborhood has been invited to participate in a friendly match of football -also known as “soccer.” Promoted by international competitions like the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, both held every four years, football has become the main subject of several discussions held among men and a cause of tremendous joy or misery. Watching a great goal or loosing a game can be the subjects of debate or celebration amongst football fans, sports writers and athletes alike. But, most importantly, football unites and excites people of all ages everywhere in the world regardless of their religion, their culture, or their political and ethnical backgrounds.
