Football is the name given to a number of different, but related, team sports. The most popular of these world-wide is association football (also known as soccer). The English word “football” is also applied to American football, Australian rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, rugby football (rugby union and rugby league), and related games. Each of these codes (specific sets of rules) is to a greater or lesser extent referred to as “football” and sometimes “footy” by its followers.

These games involve:

a large spherical or prolate spheroid ball, which is itself called a football.

a team scoring goals and/or points, by moving the ball to an opposing team’s end of the field and either into a goal area, or over a line.

the goal and/or line being defended by the opposing team.

players being required to move the ball mostly by kicking and — in some codes — carrying and/or passing the ball by hand.

goals and/or points resulting from players putting the ball between two goalposts.

offside rules, in most codes, restricting the movement of players.

in some codes, points are mostly scored by players carrying the ball across the goal line.

in most codes players scoring a goal must put the ball either under or over a crossbar between the goalposts.

players in some codes receiving a free kick after they take a mark/make a fair catch.

Dublin offers a broad variety of world famous golf courses to play. Almost all of these courses are appropriate for beginners and experts both. The ideal time for Golfing in Ireland is during the summer season. The most important Irish tournament of international level is the Murphy’s Irish Open Golf Tournament, which attracts thousands of sports lovers to watch.

Horse racing on a top class horse in the lush green wide lands is every adventurous man’s dream. Dublin is fairly known for its high breed horses and thrilling race-courses. These world class race-courses provide entertainment and exercise to the riders and the spectators. Horse racing is a popular historical game of Dublin, now it has become a great business as well.

What is the Best Spectator Team Sport in the World?

As an avid sports fan I’ve watched many different sports. I think the best way to approach this question is to break it down into types of sport. The largest of these is the grab the ball and run forward type. This involves big musclebound guys grabbing an odd shaped ball and running forward until someone from the other team stops them. The aim is to get past a line at the other end of the field, often there are posts to hit the ball between in order to get extra points. In this category are; American Football, Rugby, Rugby League and Australian Rules Football. Most of these sports can be very entertaining at times although they generally suffer from two main faults. Those faults are firstly their stop-start nature which means there is rarely a passage of play that lasts longer than a few seconds. The second problem is the people who play them. These sports are not pretty to watch, skills are limited as speed and strength are everything. The people who play tend to reflect this fact.

Next up, sports with bats and sticks.

Ice Hockey, which despite having the potential to be a very entertaining and skillful game, is ruined by the neanderthal nature of the competitors and is therefore cut. Baseball and Cricket both have entertaining moments if you’ve got a few days to spare but best team sport? No way. Hurling and Lacrosse both involve whacking a ball around a field. They’re pretty skillful sports and played by real sportsmen. Sadly, the ball is just far too small for the size of the field. Hopeless for the shortsighted.  Read more... Irish Sports

When you are in Dublin, especially over the summer months, you should make an effort to see a game of Gaelic football or Hurling, two uniquely Irish sports which have passionate support throughout the country. The summer period is when the annual championships in both sports take place, and each county fields a team. The championships culminate in September and tickets are like a gold dust, but you might find another event earlier in the summer that isn’t sold out. The biggest stadium in Ireland – for any sport – is Croke Park, and that’s where the highest-profile events take place.

Gaelic football

Gaelic football became popular as early as the 16th century, when teams might have consisted of all the fit men of a town or parish. In those earliest days, the rather unorganized game would begin between the two towns and end when one side had managed to force the ball across a line into the other’s territory.

The modern game plays like a mix of soccer and rugby. Teams of 15 players kick or hand pass a ball around a grass pitch towards each others goals to either score a point over the bar or goal. The ball used in Gaelic football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball. The action is fast and furious, and play is rough. Protective equipment is nonexistent.

Being a team sport, football not only exercises the human body and mind, but also brings people together to produce measurable results. With famous players from every country, like the Brazilians Pelé and Zico, or the Hungarian Puskás, football-which is usually referred to as Association football in order to distinguish it from rugby football-has literally been worshiped mainly by male fans.

At least once, every boy in almost every neighborhood has been invited to participate in a friendly match of football -also known as “soccer.” Promoted by international competitions like the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, both held every four years, football has become the main subject of several discussions held among men and a cause of tremendous joy or misery. Watching a great goal or loosing a game can be the subjects of debate or celebration amongst football fans, sports writers and athletes alike. But, most importantly, football unites and excites people of all ages everywhere in the world regardless of their religion, their culture, or their political and ethnical backgrounds.  Read more...
